2017-18 CHL Upper Deck Review

I have to say that I’m extremely excited to be reviewing this box of cards as it’s the return of CHL hockey cards to the hockey card world.  I love collecting autographs and while the boxes contain 1 star autograph, it’s the base cards that I’m looking forward to sending out.  CHL players are some of the best to get autographs from, especially since there is a significant drop in interest compared to the NHL, therefore more players may be willing to sign.

In the past, I’ve gotten star players such as Nathan Mackinnon, Alex Galchenyuk, Mark Scheifele and Tomas Jurco before they made it into the NHL.

Set Checklist

This checklist rivals only OPC with their massive checklist of many, many players.  While this checklist is large, I’m guessing only a handful (say <40) of these players will make a significant impact in the NHL.  The range of players, from top 2016 draft picks such as Sam Steel and Tyler Benson and 2017 draft pick Cody Glass make up the recent picks in the NHL entry drafts.  Also included in this set are the 2018 NHL draft prospects such as Filip Zadina and Andrei Svechnikov (if you can, get these guys while they’re still in the CHL!).

Take a look at the full checklist here:

These cards are non-gloss cards, absolutely perfect for the “lazy” grapher who doesn’t want to prep cards.  I love that ink sticks to these cards so well and allows me to send them without the worry of having to prep them properly.

Take a look below at this tested Ty Ronning card that has both blue and black ink.

“Sign Space”

Lots of sign space on the base cards, the only issue I’ll have is for players who are wearing black jerseys and the players who sign with black or blue ink on these cards.  Regardless, UD can’t help what players wear and likely will have a mix of white / black and all the other colors in between for their cards.
