I’ve seen some pretty good product reviews of the new Upper Deck Artifacts set which features scoring superstar Patrik Laine of the Winnipeg Jets on the front of the box. I was hoping I’d land one of his cards in this box break but spoiler alert, I didn’t manage to get his card. That’s a major bummer.
As usual, I won’t get into the major details of the set considering there are others who have reviewed (and I agree!) this product. For product information and full set checklists, visit cardboard connection:
The Artifacts are a decent sized set which includes superstars such as Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid and Alex Ovechkin and a slew of both Legends (Mario Lemieux, Joe Sakic & Wayne Gretzky) and Rookies (Brock Boeser, Alex Tuch & Tyson Jost). The superstars, listed above, are numbered /599 while the stars of the game are unnumbered. You’ll be hard pressed to find any fringe type players in this set (maybe Rookies might be considered fringe) but you’ll find plenty of today’s top stars on either the first or second lines.
At first glance, I thought there would be a significant amount of prep work required as I ran my finger across the card, I felt a tinge of glossy feelings. As you can see from the image below, it actually turns out fairly nice. No signs of ink bleeding. I have to say that I’m presently surprised that zero extra work has to be done on the senders’ behalf. Score!
Blue / Black Sharpie with no prep
Lots of real estate on the card, as do most base cards do, and I love the faded transition from the top of the card down towards the team, silver logo. In the past, players have not always signed in that spot just above the logo but I can imagine that in a blue or black sharpie, it would look spectacular!
Overall, I do like this set and will continue to buy boxes that are released each year. This years’ designs are very nice and I find that Artifacts continue to impress me.
