Ryan Whitney

Got a nice autograph from Ryan Whitney, currently the host of Spittin Chiclets which offers a podcast for listeners.  Honestly, I’ve never listened much to them on podcast and maybe I should start it up but it’s an interesting transition from hockey player over to podcaster.  You don’t see too many of them popping up but if you’re aware of some, let me know!

Ryan, as we all know, has played a tremendous amount of hockey over his 11 year career although never played 82 games in an entire season during those years (he came super close at 81 games in 2006/07 with the Penguins.

He was originally drafted by the Penguins in 2002, going 5th overall.  Pre-draft, Ryan was slated as a 3rd overall prospect in North American skaters with Jay Bouwmeester and Rick Nash going 1st and 2nd rated.  He eventually made his debut into the NHL in the 2005/06 season, playing 68 games.  Fortunately for Whitney and the Pens, Whitney emerged as a top defenseman with 59 points along side with the a significant youth movement as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal and Marc-Andre Fleury leading the charge.

Ryan eventually went on to play for multiple other teams after his tenure with the Pittsburgh Penguins.  The Ducks, Oilers and Panthers were teams he stopped at before eventually becoming a UFA in the 2013/14 season.  Ryan reached the playoffs three tomes, losing both times to the Detroit Red Wings and once to the Senators.
