Akil Thomas is an NHL draftee, as he was selected in the 2nd round to the LA Kings. He was drafted recently as it appears on scouting reports right about where he was slated to go, in the late first or 2nd rounds. A lot of the reports that I’ve read on Akil is that he’s a “jack of all trades” type player and will be hard to outwork him. It absolutely boggles my mind that players that are being drafted were born in the year 2000.
Thomas got his start in 2016, being drafted by his current team, the IceDogs. He was selected 12th overall in the OHL priority draft that also saw Barrett Hayton and Bode Wilde become selected. Since that draft, Akil has put up 48 points in his rookie season and a follow up performance of 81 points. I’m really interested to see how well he’ll perform, hopefully notching close to or over 100 points this season. Akil was also selected to be the “A” last season in which I assume he’ll continue that role this season.
Fortunately for Akil, he’s not only played for the IceDogs but also Team Canada on a number of occasions. He’s helped Team Canada capture gold during the 2017 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament which was held in Europe.
Gettin’ the auto
I got Akil’s autograph in 134 days through a private address which I’ll keep to myself. I definitely appreciate that Akil spent time sending me back a message on social in which I asked if I could send him some cards to get signed during the offseason. As you can see, he signed this card in a silver sharpie which appears very nicely on the Upper Deck CHL hockey cards!
No surprise that Akil was sent back to his junior club, which I believe it best for his development at this time.
