Ben Hawerchuk is the son of Hockey Hall of Famer and current GM for the Barrie Colts Dale Hawerchuk.  I’ll do my best to stay away from the comparisons in Ben’s early hockey career as the game has definitely evolved and is considerably more competitive than ever.  I think it’d be pretty rare for any CHL players to hit over 125 points but during a season when Dale hit 183 points, five other players did so too.  Alain Lemieux, Chris Valentine, Daniel Rioux, André Côté and François Lecompte all accomplished the feat and that’s only the QMJHL!

Ben Hawerchuk, currently undrafted, is still doing his best to make his mark with the Barrie Colts.  He sits fifth on the team in scoring with Lucas Chiodo securing top spot at the moment.  It’s likely going to be a down season for the Barrie Colts given where they currently sit in the standings.  It’s not that I don’t believe that they’ll make the playoffs this year but it’s hard to imagine them knocking off a top seed when they’re there.  I do believe that a couple high draft picks will help them achieve success, something they had done in the past.  For Ben, he was invited to the Flames training camp in 2018.

Ben, thank you for the signed hockey cards!

Gettin’ the auto

An outstanding fourteen day turnaround from Ben Hawerchuk, signing my CHL Upper Deck hockey card.  I had sent it to him through the mail to the Barrie Colts and received it back, signed in a blue sharpie.  Comparing Dale’s autograph to Ben’s, I’d say there wasn’t a lot taken from his dad’s auto but good on Ben to create his own scribble.

Hopefully Ben can secure a spot in a bottom six role on an NHL team!

A video review of Ben Hawerchuk

Great video of Ben and Dale along with the other hockey connections that have gone through the OHL.
