Drake Caggiula came into the NHL with a ton of hype. His role in the NCAA Frozen Four tournament where he potted a handful of points in the championship game and was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. Overall for the season, he scored 51 points in 39 games.
Coming into the NHL, there were many teams that were clamoring for Drake’s services. Reportedly, it was down to either Vancouver or Edmonton in which we all know the team he chose. Perhaps if he had chosen to play in Vancouver, he would have had the opportunity to pair up with his UND line mate, Brock Boeser.
If you’re a fan of the Oilers, you can tell that things haven’t gone as expected. Drake has scored a total of 38 points in 127 games. He’s signed through to the 19/20 NHL season in which I can only assume he’ll get a contract extension provided he flourishes in the next couple of years.
I asked him in my letter to him what his favorite thing about attending UND and he replied with the following.
Attending the University of North Dakota was the best thing. I created a ton of life long memories and friendships. Playing hockey there was a dream come true. The fans and the State of North Dakota treated us so well and I will always remember that.
Gettin’ the auto
Drake Caggiula signed my O-Pee-Chee hockey card through the Edmonton Oilers arena. For one of the newer players in the league, he’s got quite a nice autograph. It’s kind of loopy and stands out with the black sharpie he chose against the white background of the hockey card. This particular return was sent back to me in 178 days.
A nice trio of links here but not much in terms of the type of player he was intending to be.
A video review of Drake Caggiula
Here is a great compliation of Drake’s highlights between 2010 – 2016. I’m guessing most of these clips are between 2012 – 2016 when he played for University of North Dakota.
