Jakob came into his NHL draft year with significant hype around him. He is son of Jeff Chychrun, former NHL player who played eight seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Edmonton Oilers. Now, I’m not saying that Jakob didn’t deserve his ranking (4th among North American skaters), it’s just that having the bloodlines obviously catch the attention of scouts in the NHL (or at least that’s what I perceive).
Jakob ended up going 16th overall to the Arizona Coyotes, dropping a few spots from where he was slated to be drafted. I do think Arizona got a steal in selecting Jakob this late in the NHL draft as he’s lived up to expectations in my books. He’s a top defenseman on the team, top minutes (~20 minutes per game) and putting up points to boot.
I managed to watch Jakob while he was at the Top Prospects game in 2016, while it was held here in Vancouver. He played well, although to be honest I didn’t know a lot of the players and only knew him due to who his father was.
