I got this great card signed by Matt Read, currently an
unrestricted free agent [edit: he just signed with the Minnesota Wild]. Before his time in the NHL, he spent four years with the Bemidji State Beavers of the CHA / WCHA. He also had an 11 game stint with the Adirondack Phantoms of the AHL. He was originally an undrafted player but made his NHL debut with the Philadelphia Flyers on October 6, 2011.
Unfortunately for Matt, his rookie season in the NHL produced the most points of all seasons, netting 47 points in 2011/12. It has lead to Ron Hextall to demote Matt to the AHL and eventually notifying Matt that he will not be resigned with the club as he’s an unrestricted free agent.
One story he’ll be able to tell his kids (and grand kids) is that he scored on the HHOF Martin Brodeur for his first NHL goal and future HHOF goalie, Roberto Luongo for his second career goal, both of which I’ve got signed cards from in the past.
It’ll be interesting to see if any teams take a “Flyer” (get it?) on Matt this upcoming season. He’s a speedy and versatile player which can be useful on a cup contending team looking for depth.
Gettin’ the auto
This card was signed by Matt in blue sharpie, inscribing his number “24” which was worn during his Flyer career. While he’s far from the most popular player to wear 24 (Chris Chelios), he managed to hit the 24 goal mark once in his NHL career, something Chelios never accomplished.
Take a look at every single one of Matt’s 24 goals from the 2011/12 NHL season
