I was pretty excited to get this Upper Deck “Star Rookies” card signed by Nikolaj Ehlers of the Winnipeg Jets. Nikolaj has become a nice addition to an already fantastic top 6 in Winnipeg and I strongly believe that Winnipeg will win a cup within the next decade, given the talent that they’ve accumulated through the NHL draft.
For many Canucks fans, they are likely to compare Nikolaj Ehlers to Jake Virtanen, as Jake was drafted three spots ahead of Nikolaj in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. While Jake has currently underperformed as a Vancouver Canuck, Nik seems to have thrived within the Jets organization. As of the writing of this blog post, he’s scored a total of 162 points in the regular season and an additional 7 points in the post season. He had his first taste of post season hockey, helping the Jets get to the third round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, eventually losing to the Vegas Golden Knights.
One question is Nik thriving off of his linemates or is he that good? During the regular season he is regularly paired with Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele.
I do believe that Nik has more to offer but perhaps fans may have overlooked Ehlers altogether, as stated within this article by Rob Mahon of The Hockey Writers. I can totally agree with the article given the fact that there are many great players in Winnipeg.
Gettin’ the auto
I got this autograph from Nikolaj Ehlers during the Winnipeg Jets during last NHL season. He signed this card for me in 210 days sent it to him at the beginning of the season. The Jets, in general, have been one of my favourite teams to send to considering I also got back Mark Scheifele and Jacob Trouba as well. This is the first time I’ve gotten Ehlers’ autograph and am really happy to have it returned.
