Phil Varone is an Canadian born hockey player, currently playing for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL. If Phil makes the NHL as a full time player, his path has been definitely a roller coaster ride.
Phil was initially drafted by the San Jose Sharks in 2009, 147th overall but never saw ice time with the big club. He spent time in the CHL, but shortly after the 2010/11 season, he could not negotiate a contract with them therefore making him an unrestricted free agent. For the next five years, Phil has gone through a few organizations such as Buffalo, Ottawa and now resides within the Philadelphia Flyers organization. His NHL totals haven’t been staggering, sitting at 10 points over 50 games although to be fair, I’m positive he never has gotten a fair shake at playing significant minutes in most games.
I can imagine it must be tough for Phil to stay positive but I’m sure he’ll continue to hone his craft and improve his skillset until he finds a team that is willing to take a gamble on him. Perhaps the Canucks will take him as they have already “reclaimed” a few players on their current roster.
