Rick DiPietro, 1st overall pick in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, was selected by the Mike Milbury and the New York Islanders.  He has the prestigious honor of being one of three goalies in all of the NHL history to be selected first in an NHL draft.  Unfortunately, Rick also has the reputation of the “bust” label as he never lived up to the hype.  He was the starting goaltender in four of the thirteen seasons he played professional hockey, all with the NY Islanders.  I’m sure that injuries played a big part in his departure from the NHL.

While Rick never did live up to his potential, he did participate in the NHL All-Star game in 2008.   He represented the Eastern Conference (as the starter) along side with Tim Thomas and Tomas Vokoun.  Rick only let in one goal while the Eastern all stars scored five in the first period.  Only if he had Ovechkin, Lecavalier and Kovalchuk in front of him, he’d have a ton more cups under his belt!

Gettin’ the auto

This was a great return for me from Rick DiPietro as this was the first time I’ve sent to ESPN Radio.  Obviously, it’ll be a very short list that I ever send there but it’s great to know that any former NHL players that work for them, I should be able to get things signed.  These cards were sent to Rick and I got them returned in just under a month.  As you can see, the card doesn’t show up great on a scanned version but the foil and blue sharpie makes it look really nice in person!

You never really want to see a player with such potential and hype to fail but as we know, it happens.
